Whose Counsel Do You Take?

MESSAGE

Goldy counsels are healthy for our spiritual growth. Where ever such counsel prevails, there is safety (Proverbs 11:14). We all come to certain phases in our lives where we need to make serious life-changing decisions and we need counsel. On such occasions, we must be very careful whose counsel we listen to.

The Bible says that a man is blessed only if he walks in the counsel of the godly (Psalms 1:1). We must verify every counsel in the light of the scripture. Any counsel that contradicts the word of God is not from the Lord.

This is why we must know the word of God for ourselves. We must be like the Bereans church who went further to study scripture for themselves to see if those things they were taught from the scripture are true (Acts 17:10-12).

You can be sure that every counsel from God’s word is sure and safe. When believers know what God says in His words, they can quickly discern if a counsel is of the Holy Spirit (Psalms 16:7).

The Bible admonishes the believers to try every spirit. You must judge every counsel from even men who are church leaders and other believers by the precepts in God’s word (1 John 4:1).

In our text of the day, we see Abram listen to what seems to be a harmless yet foolish counsel from Sarai his wife. A counsel birthed in the flesh and not according to God’s word and will. That singular counsel turned out to be woe of the world even to date.

The fact that the person giving counsel is close to you or spiritual is not good enough to take it ‘hook, line, and sinker’, it is expedient that you check what God has said on the matter.

Ask God for the grace to be able to discern between godly counsel and fleshy counsel.

REFLECTION

Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful.

Psalms 1:1

Not every counsel is godly, beware of wrong counsels.

PRAYER

Father, please help me to discern and walk in godly counsel.
