Better Than Others 3?

Text: Ephesians 1:4

Further Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:26-30

‭‭
Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,

Ephesians 1:4 NKJV

MESSAGE

I have realized that most people who find themselves successful often prop up themselves as the only ones who can do it all. One African proverb says it is the one whose Cocoa survives that will be deemed an expert. What this means is that many people tried the same method you took and failed, the fact that you succeed does not mean you are the only one who knows how to do it all.

The Bible says that it is God that lifts and also puts down. In fact, God can take the ignorant, the unfit, the foolish, the unthinkable fellow and make him or her great. The reason for this is so that none can glory in his presence.

Our text of the day showed how God called us and chose us to be his own special before the foundation of the world. Our further reading specifically destroys any room that we may have for boasting.

For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called.  ‭‭I Corinthians‬ ‭1:26‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

Think about our salvation, it is by grace and it is the gift of God. The Bible says it is not by works lest any should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9). Where then is the room for self-promotion when everything we have received has come because of God’s benevolence?

The idea that we are better than others stems from one ancient sin which is pride. And Jesus warns that unless we repent, just like the religious people who think they are better than others we will likewise perish.

‭‭I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.” Luke‬ ‭13:5‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

REFLECTION

For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Luke 14:11 NKJV‬‬

Pride is the enemy of true repentance. Humble yourself before the Lord so that He can save and lift you.

PRAYER

Father, I humble myself and repent of every pride in my heart. Help me to see others as you see them and not with an inferior mindset.
