Scripture Reference
“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” – John 1:14 (KJV)
Christians today often misunderstand grace. Some see it as a license to sin, believing they can be forgiven repeatedly. However, grace is not a permit to live in sin but rather the divine enablement to overcome it. For believers, the new creation life brings a supernatural ability to live above sin and the world.
Paul addresses this misconception in Romans 6:1-2 when he asks, “Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid!” Grace is never meant to be abused. Instead, it is paired with truth, which brings freedom. As Jesus said in John 8:32, “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
Grace and Truth in Jesus
Jesus came to give both grace and truth in abundance. He is:
1. The Way – Grace is the unmerited favor of God that grants us access to Him.
2. The Truth – He reveals God’s nature, attributes, and will, exposing the lies of the enemy.
3. The Life – Jesus imparts God’s very nature and identity to those who believe in Him.
Grace saves us, but truth keeps us free. The more truth we know about God, the more power we have to overcome sin, the flesh, the world, and the devil. God’s plan is to expose us to His grace and sustain us with His truth.
How Do We Know the Truth?
In John 17:17, Jesus prays, “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” The Word of God reveals the truth, guiding us in how to live according to God’s will. It also protects us from the lies of the devil, who seeks to keep us in bondage through deception. Without the truth, we remain vulnerable to his schemes.
