Mercy: God’s Greatest Attribute

 Text: Exodus 34:6-7 (KJV)

And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.

MESSAGE

Many have called God by His different attributes, some of these names were given by men because of what God did for them, but what happens when God declares His name? Our text of the day shows clearly how God declared to us Mercy as His first attribute. The Lord, The Lord God, Merciful… This I must say should thrill our hearts that we have a merciful God. Who in His infinite mercy is willing to pardon our ignorance and frailty as feeble dust. Psalm 103:8 says He is plenteous in mercy, and verse 13 speaks of His fatherly pity towards His children. So great is God’s mercy that He will not always chide nor keep His anger forever. Thank God for His mercies which endures forever.

Though sin demands instant retribution yet God’s mercy would defer justice and offer pardon. God sent His only Son to pay for the sin we committed against Him, rather than punish us, His merciful nature bought our pardon. We are saved only by His mercies. Anyone and everyone who has enjoyed God’s saving grace received it because God chose fo to have mercy on Him.

Dear reader, think upon the many time you have done something deserving God’s judgement, but for the timely intervention of mercy. Mercy rejoiceth over judgment. Mercy is so great that it is distilled every morning for God’s people to walk before Him in the purity of life. Mercy must be released for sinners to repent and for the saint to walk blamelessly before God. Mercy cannot be overlooked, a day of non-release of mercy would mean judgment. I believe what judgement day would mean for men is the absolute withdrawal of God’s mercy for mankind – a total deprecation of mercy leading to divine justice.

David for example was a man who understood this great nature of God and spoke more profoundly about it. He knew how mercy brought him out of the horrible pit and from the miry clay of sin and set him on the immovable rock of salvation. He committed adultery and killed a man, yet he received mercy. Are you living under any guilt of sin? Do you feel the weight of your sin is so great that God can not pardon? Friend, all you need to do is to take hold of His mercy. Jesus Christ is God’s mercy personified. For God being so merciful to the world sent His only begotten Son to grant all who will believe redemption and forgiveness of all sin.

God is merciful. You cannot separate mercy from God – to do that is to call for His judgement which none can bear. But have you taken advantage of His rich mercy? Have you thanked Him for His numerous show of mercies to you and your family? Truly, it is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed. Lamentation 3:22. Why not run to the throne of grace to obtain the fresh mercy of the day?

REFLECTION

It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.
Lamentations 3:22‭-‬23 KJV.

Think about what your life could have been but for God’s mercy.

Have mercy filled day. God bless you.
