And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.

Genesis 12:5

MESSAGE

In this Christian journey, God wants you to travel light. There can be no weight or sin strapped to your life. They will only weigh you down and hinder you from reaching the height God has designed for your life. They may also hinder you from receiving your heavenly rewards, so be careful (Hebrews 12:1).

When God saves a man, He saves him alone. Just as the scripture said of Abraham, “I called him alone” – no third party. In the same light, you are saved alone, and you are expected to travel without weights or loads that can hinder your progress to heaven (Isaiah 51:2).

Abraham in our text of the day, though obeyed God decided to take an extra load with him on his journey. His taking Lot caused him some delay and even temporal separation of God from him. God never spoke to Abraham again until he separated from Lot.

You can not allow just anybody into your life on this pilgrimage. Your friendship and relationships must be defined. There is no room for any unnecessary entanglement. You must relate with people in the love of God but not all should have access to your life (Amos 3:3).

Do you notice that some of the people you allowed in your life have ended up becoming weights to you? They seem to be dragging you back always. You must separate from them (2 Corinthians 6:17).

Who are your associates and friends? Are they men with common spiritual inclination or they have other desires other than yours for God? You must quickly separate yourself.

The Bible clearly instructs us that “evil communications corrupt good manners” (1 Corinthians 15:33). If you are still particular about making heaven, then you must clean up your life.

You can not afford to be friends with the world, you will only be dragged into the world. God is advising you to drop what or who is the extra luggage attached to your life on this Christian race (James 4:4; 1 John 2:15-17).

It is not bad to help people – help is good Christian virtue but any help or relationship that will derail you from the path of righteousness must be avoided at all costs.

Don’t forget that we all personally would appear before the judgment seat of Christ to give account for our lives on earth. No group accounting, so you are responsible for yourself on the day of reckoning (2 Corinthians 5:10).

Jesus is coming soon, do not allow any hidden sin or habits or person to take you off the will of God for your life. You must beware. May God keep you till glory. Amen.

REFLECTION

Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

James 1:21

Whatever distraction is hindering you from walking with God must be dropped. Whether it is a habit, a person, entertainment, or internet, or mobile devices, you must ask for the grace to shed those weights.

PRAYER

Father, please help me shed every weight weighing me down on my Christian journey.
